All Fans Are Encouraged to Be the Fourth Haim Bandmate.

"When are you speaking to the Haim sisters?" a message reads. "My request was to ask if I can become their fourth member."

However, there remains one problem: I also desires to be the Haims' additional sibling. And we're in plentiful company. Several celebrated supporters have also petitioned for the honor.

It's clear an irresistible appeal is going on. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana started their path playing gigs at local delicatessens with their family. Today, they are multiple Grammy Award contenders.

Similar to the best bands, they're a close unit. Their music videos often show them marching in sync down the avenues of Los Angeles. On stage, they perform with such boundless exuberance you find yourself thinking, "I wish to be a piece of that, too."

"The amount of times on tour that audience members told us and said, 'After your show, I got a guitar'," remarks Alana, the most junior of the sisters. "That is the biggest honour. It is a prize in itself. Our mission is accomplished if we can motivate young girls to make music."

"So all gets an invitation to be the next part of the family."

Historic Recognition

The group have called into a break, where they're taking a pause after an lengthy tour in support of their new album, I Quit.

They're right now celebrating the news it's been in the running for best rock album at the Grammys – with Haim the pioneering all-woman band ever in contention for the award.

"I watch the nominations every year, so it kind of feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is read out," says Alana. "I needed to phone my sisters to say, 'Am I hearing this right or am I hallucinating'?"

The importance of the accolade resonates with the trio.

"We really set out to make a guitar-driven album this time, so it's a significant milestone," continues Alana. "Yet we're just appreciative for the women that paved the way."

Emotional Upheaval and Candor

The project came out of a time of transition. All three sisters were single, and the music captures that odd transitional period where you're relieved to be free, but not quite ready to start anew.

The words follow breakups and partings. The sisters seek love, but not the relationships they've experienced. You can hear them determining in the moment who they are becoming.

"I adore way of putting it, yes," says Danielle. "I Quit is like a mantra. You have to make an effort in shutting out the criticism and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."

Development of Style

That recent resilience required a fresh approach – more unpolished and powerful than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who worked on producing the album, that started with the drum sound.

"Percussion is such a detailed thing, and I focus so intensely about it," she says.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our biography," jokes Alana. "I've said it, our albums don't start until we find the right drum sound."

Stories and Shared Humor

The trio's honesty shaped the album's promotional campaign, where the sisters disclosed some of their personal tales.

Someone left Este over a medical consideration. Alana shared a story of flying to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a casual gesture at midnight.

"Experiencing these heartbreaks, you just feel like there's no hope," notes Alana. "Thus to be able to laugh at those stories and have them tell you wilder stories, it's so amazing."

A Secure Path

It's not difficult sense a change in the band. Today, Haim are more confident of their standing in the music world.

They're top-billed acts, with chart-topping albums and an worldwide fan base.

However Haim will forever be their number one priority.

"My sisters and I have been making music since I was four," concludes Alana. "It feels as if no other path that we were destined for. And I'm really thankful we've reached this point and we're still going strong."
