A fatal train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the pace and handling of the country's major government projects.
The accident happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route constructed to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.
“We will thoroughly investigate what caused this tragedy,” declared the country's president.
The leader reported that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The leader noted plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the former leader, whose term ended the year before. This rail line was a hallmark of his government's economic goals for the southern region.
Another ambitious train initiative from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to stimulate the economy of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Worries
The building of both train projects was managed by the nation's military, marking a notable expansion of its responsibilities in civilian works. They were built at an fast-tracked pace, surpassing expectations to be at least partly opened before the end of that presidency.
However, this fast-paced schedule had also raised persistent apprehensions over construction quality.
- Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This involves an previous accident this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen two non-fatal derailments.
Appeals for Investigation and Halt
In the wake of the disaster, the head of a key rival party called for an immediate halt in the construction and operation of all similar projects.
This stoppage was requested while awaiting a thorough safety audit. The party emphasized that the loss of life "calls for immediate answers."
In response, the head of state maintained that the train had been functioning in full accordance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the development and operation of these national projects.
